The esophageal cancer isn’t a really frequent disease, but quite difficult to treat and to operate because of the esophagus position both in the thorax and the abdominal area. The esophagus cancer shows two different histological types:

    • Esophageal adenocarcinoma, predominant in 1/3 distal of the esophagus (the inferior 1/3)
    • Squamous-cell carcinoma (predominant histology at the cervical esophagus and proximal 2/3 (the thoracic superior 2/3)

Following, our colleague Dr. Paula Pruteanu, oncology specialist doctor at the Medisprof clinic presents the principal risk factors of the esophagus cancer in order to well protect your health.

What are the risk factors of the esophagus cancer?

The main risks for the adeno-carcinoma esophagus are represented by: the gastro-esophageal reflux, the obesity and the Barrett esophagus.

The principal risk factors for the squamous cell carcinoma are the tobacco and alcohol consumption. Other incriminated factors in the esophageal cancer are the Howel-Evans’ syndrome (genetic disease) characterized by palmo-plantar hyperkeratosis (thickening of the skin) after caustic soda ingestion.

Also, the esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma was associated with:

    • A low consumption of C vitamin.
    • An increase of nitrate, nitrite and nitrosamine consumption
    • Other pathologies such as ORL cancers and celiac diseases. (http://celiac.org/celiac-disease/what-is-celiac-disease/)

The legumes and fruits consumption has a protective effect against the esophageal cancer.

    What is the Barrett disease?

The Barrett’s esophagus is a metaplasia of the esophageal mucosal injury by chronic gastro-esophageal tissue reflux. Patients with Barrett’s esophagus have a 30-125 times higher risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma compared to the general population.

Medisprof team encourages you to make regular control in order to early detect any affection which can trigger a esophageal cancer.
